Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions about bone marrow and stem cell transplantation to help you make informed decisions.

01

What is a Bone Marrow Transplant (Stem Cell Transplant)?

A bone marrow transplant is a medical treatment that replaces your bone marrow with healthy cells. The replacement cells can either come from your own body or from a donor. It can also be called a stem cell transplant or hematopoietic stem cell transplant.

Transplantation can be used to treat certain cancers such as leukemia, myeloma, and lymphoma, as well as other blood and immune system diseases that affect the bone marrow.

Leukemia Myeloma Lymphoma
02

What are stem cells? What is bone marrow?

Stem cells are special cells that can make copies of themselves and change into many different kinds of cells that your body needs. Hematopoietic stem cells are stem cells that turn into blood cells.

Bone marrow is soft, spongy tissue found in the center of most bones. It contains hematopoietic stem cells, which are responsible for producing:

  • Red blood cells – carry oxygen and remove carbon dioxide
  • White blood cells – fight infections
  • Platelets – help blood clot and stop bleeding
03

What are the different types of transplant?

Autologous Transplant (AUTO)

Uses your own stem cells. These are collected before high-dose chemotherapy or radiation and returned afterward.

Allogenic Transplant (ALLO)

Uses stem cells from a donor. The donor must closely match your HLA type to reduce complications such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).

Other options include: Umbilical cord blood transplant · Parent-child or haploidentical transplant

04

How does a bone marrow / stem cell transplant work?

The transplant process includes collecting stem cells, preparing the body with chemotherapy or radiation, transplant day, and recovery.

A catheter may be placed in the chest to give medications, transfusions, and stem cells. Recovery involves close monitoring and infection prevention.

Collection Preparation Transplant Day Recovery
05

What is recovering from a bone marrow transplant like?

Recovery takes time and happens in stages. Blood counts initially drop, increasing infection risk. As new stem cells grow, blood counts rise and immune function improves.

Regular follow-up visits help monitor recovery, manage side effects, and detect complications early.

Ongoing Follow-Up · Infection Prevention · Gradual Recovery
06

How do you know if the transplant worked?

A transplant is considered successful when blood counts return to safe levels and the disease is controlled or in remission.

Long-term monitoring is essential to ensure continued health and manage late side effects.

Success Indicators

Blood count recovery · Disease remission · Improved immune function
